Sita’s diabetes prevention journey in Bedford
What did you find useful about the group sessions? What stood out for you in your sessions?
Sharing real ideas with the other participants, we all shared exactly the same goals. There was a non-judgement, friendly atmosphere and I was able to share meal ideas. The programme is very convenient and fits around my lifestyle doing video or telephone sessions. I would like people to be given the same opportunity that I have been given.
What changes did you make to your lifestyle, e.g. exercise routine, dietary, habits…?
Upped my exercises and started to use the gym properly and it is making me feel healthier. I’m making better food choices. It makes me eat more consciously because I have been working out so I don’t want the benefits to be lost! Also, you can make the NDPP fit around you and your lifestyle.
Have you accessed any local services (i.e. leisure centres, exercise on referral) due to this programme?
The gym and I have been using a local Personal Trainer.
What was your favourite part of the programme, why?
I really enjoyed the learning part of the programme and knowing what you are eating and being able to change and adapt what you eat based on personal preference.
What challenges did you face with the programme, and how did you overcome them?
Trying to come up with exciting meals to eat and this was even more difficult as a vegetarian. I also have a nut allergy which is a real challenge. I have explored different options to vary my diet and by asking people questions in the sessions.
What changes have you seen in any measurements that have been taken? E.g. HBa1c, waist measurement, weight, clothes size etc…
I have gone down two clothing sizes. My waist is now more defined and I have managed to lose 4 ½ stone and keep the weight off.
Would you, or have you, recommended the programme to others? Why?
I would recommend the programme to others - I can see the programme benefiting people of all different backgrounds and needs.
What would you say to those who are thinking about joining the programme?
Each of us needs to look after our health in the long term – 100%. You need to come in with an open mind and be excited about the process of change and lifestyle improvement.
Are there any other comments you wish to make about your experience?
I am really pleased that I did the programme and have invested in myself. I’ve had the opportunity to make better long-term choices. It is accessible to everyone and of course, FREE! It has helped to make me really think about what I am doing. You should 100% do the programme. The material and delivery is not something you can read in a book.
