Victor's diabetes prevention journey in Luton

When I first got the test results saying I was close to getting Type 2 diabetes, I felt worried and I panicked about how I’d get over it. But thanks to attending the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme in Luton, I’ve managed to avoid getting diabetes. I’m now able to walk more and feel less sluggish.

What was the best part of the programme for you?

The best part was making the changes and seeing the weight drop off, knowing it was all off my own back. I also enjoyed meeting new people at the group sessions.

What was the hardest part of the programme for you?

There were days when I’d struggle to find the motivation to exercise and I’d have to force myself to do it.

What did you think of the support groups?

The support groups were great. It was nice to hear new ideas and viewpoints and then piece them all together for what was best for me.

Did you find the plan easy to follow?

Yes, it was so easy to follow! I started off with bringing down my portion sizes. I enjoy cooking for myself so I could easily find ways to make the healthier changes.

Did you feel supported throughout the process?

Yes, I felt completely supported.

How has the programme changed your life?

It’s made me healthier and I feel better for it, there’s now less pressure on back and less pains. I Feel proud of myself!

Will you continue to follow the programme now you have finished?

Definitely carry on with what I’m doing, for life.

Would you recommend the programme to others, and why?

I would, it’s benefitted me and others. You learn new things, allowing you to take charge of your health.

Do you mind sharing your results? If so, what have the improvements been?

By eating smaller portions and more regular meals instead of one big late evening meal, I lost 26.5lbs in just 3 months. I now follow the portion plate and eat less unhealthy fats and more vegetables.
