Healthier You: Karen’s path to diabetes remission

Healthier You is an NHS-backed service delivered by Xyla. It helps people make lasting lifestyle changes to improve health. Originally focused on Type 2 diabetes prevention, it now includes obesity support and long-term conditions. All programmes combine nutrition, psychology and physical activity to drive sustainable behaviour change.

What is the Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission programme?

Xyla’s Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission (T2DR) is an evidence-based programme that helps people with Type 2 diabetes achieve remission. Formerly the NHS Low-Calorie Diet Programme, it uses a structured approach to enable rapid weight loss and lasting change.

The 12-month programme includes an initial assessment, a 12-week total diet replacement phase, food reintroduction and ongoing support from diabetes practitioners. Participants also access online resources and benefit from a multidisciplinary team.

Karen’s Journey to Diabetes Remission

When Karen joined the Type 2 Diabetes Remission Programme (T2DR) in April 2024, she was living with Type 2 diabetes and wanted to make radical changes to improve her health. Her goal was to stop relying on medication and take control of her wellbeing.

Transforming Habits

With the support of the programme, Karen took a disciplined approach to food and drink. She cut down on sugar, reduced portion sizes and made better food choices through planning and preparation. Eating out became a mindful experience, with Karen staying focused on healthier options and limiting alcohol intake.

“I became disciplined when ordering at restaurants and started planning my meals properly. It was tough at first, but worth it. I ceased to be diabetic, with no medication needed. It was all down to lifestyle change.

The journey wasn’t without challenges. Karen admits feeling frustrated and tired at times, especially during social occasions, but her determination kept her on track.

“I felt hungry and angry sometimes because I had to be so radical. It was difficult for socialising, but I knew why I was doing it.”

Healthier You: The results

Overcoming the challenges, Karen’s commitment delivered remarkable results that have had a huge impact on her health and happiness:

  • Diabetes: No longer diabetic and medication-free
  • Weight: Significant weight loss
  • Clothing size: From size 18–20 to 14–16
  • Confidence: “My shoulders are square, not round, and my chins have disappeared.”

“Not for the faint-hearted, but worth the effort. Plan for after you finish the programme and learn what foods help you maintain a healthy lifestyle forever.”

Why it matters

Karen’s success highlights the transformative power of the Diabetes Remission Programme, not just for individuals but for the wider healthcare system. By helping people reverse Type 2 diabetes, the programme reduces reliance on medication, lowers demand for GP appointments, and improves long-term health outcomes.

Karen’s advice to others looking to start the programme: “Do it when you have no excuses; after Christmas or big celebrations. Once you start, you need 200% commitment.”
