Healthier You, delivered by Xyla, is an NHS-backed programme that helps people make sustainable lifestyle changes to improve long-term health. It offers a range of services, from diabetes prevention and management to obesity support and help for long-term conditions. Each programme combines expert-led nutrition, psychology, and physical activity to create lasting behaviour change.
The NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme (T2DR), formerly the NHS Low-Calorie Diet Programme and often called the ‘Soup and Shake’ diet, offers a clinically supported route for people living with Type 2 diabetes to achieve remission.
Participants receive ongoing guidance from dedicated health and wellbeing practitioners, supported by online learning and resources. The programme brings together expertise from GPs, dietitians, clinical psychologists and exercise specialists to provide comprehensive care throughout.
Brian joined the Type 2 Diabetes Remission Programme (T2DR) in October 2024 after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. His goal was to manage his condition and improve his overall health. At the time, Brian weighed 19 stone 2 lbs and had a tight 44-inch waist.
The programme gave him the tools and support to start a low-calorie diet, transition back to solid foods, and maintain healthy habits. The Wellbeing Way app helped him track progress and access resources throughout his journey.
“I received clear information and support to understand how to begin the weight-loss programme and then continue with food reintroduction.”
Brian retired from full-time work in February 2025, which gave him more time to focus on his health. He began attending a local gym four days a week for functional exercise and strength training, alongside walking to and from the gym. Each session lasted around two hours and included treadmill cardio work.
His dietary habits changed significantly. Brian now monitors his intake of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, tracking his calories to stay within his daily target. His meals include more vegetables and protein, such as roasted veg, fish, and chicken. Brian also pays attention to the glycemic index and glycemic load of foods and uses several low-carb, high-protein cookbooks for inspiration.
“Moving onto full-time solid food gave me back control. I even make my own bread now using spelt flour and seeds.”
Brian noted that the early stages were particularly challenging, especially during the festive season but Brian stayed motivated by tracking his progress.
“The first three months were hard but seeing the weight fall away each week was a spur to continue.”
Brian’s commitment delivered life-changing results to see him enjoy better health and wellbeing in retirement:
“The benefits are tangible. Along with weight loss, you gain self-esteem and feel fitter, even though the first few months are very low calorie. The life-changing effects are incredible: being able to bounce up off the couch, understanding what you’re eating and feeling a sense of achievement. Old friends and colleagues constantly remark on the change in me.”
Brian’s success shows how T2DR supports sustainable weight management and healthier lifestyles. By helping individuals achieve significant health improvements, the programme reduces future demand on healthcare services and improves quality of life.
His advice to others considering joining the programme:
“Be prepared for tough moments. Get family support, remove temptations and use the community forum. This programme works if you maintain resolve.”
