Anthony's journey to beat type two diabetes

What did you find useful about the group sessions? What stood out for you in your sessions?

I really enjoyed the fact that each member of the group spoke through their successes and challenges as I felt we were able to support each other and learn from each other as well.

What changes did you make to your lifestyle, e.g. exercise routine, dietary, habits…?

I learnt that it’s easier to cut down on sweets and chocolates etc if we don’t keep them in stock at home! It really helps reduce the temptation. I still enjoy puddings when I go out for dinner at a restaurant and on special occasions, but they no longer feature in my everyday diet. I also learnt the benefits of making small changes to my physical activity. Even just spending some extra time walking each day can really help improve your health. I play golf twice a week which helps get my weekly step count and I also
work on an allotment where I walk 20 minutes each way each day.

What was your favourite part of the programme, why?

I learnt a lot about how to eat healthier. I never really saw the negative impact that eating sweets and cakes regularly would have on my health. The programme’s helped me to understand what I should aim to save for occasional treats, particularly on the weekends or special occasions.

What changes have you seen in any measurements that have been taken? E.g. HBa1c, waist measurement, weight, clothes size etc…

Over the course of the programme I managed to lose 6lb in weight and I also noticed my clothes felt a lot looser and I went down a notch on my belt.

What would you say to those who are thinking about joining the programme?

Do it! There is always something to learn. You may not adopt all of the lifestyle changes that are discussed on the programme, but we all find a way that will work for us so that we can improve our health.
