Mui's diabetes prevention journey in Bedfordshire

What was the best part of the programme for you?

Being with other people and sharing my journey with them.

What was the hardest part of the programme for you?

The only real difficulty has been dealing with stiffness and the flexibility and stretching exercises.

What did you think of the support groups?

The support groups provide great support for all members of the group. This is not a quick fix and the groups help you to stay on track and make sustainable changes.

Did you find the plan easy to follow?

Yes, the programme is easy to follow and allowed me to make the small steps necessary to change my lifestyle. I have found the small changes have really made a difference, I have restructured my diet and the way I do things to increase my activity levels. The materials we have been given are really easy to follow and helped me to learn more at home.

Did you feel supported throughout the process?

Yes, I have felt very supported through the process. Our coach answers our questions in a way we can understand. He listens to people’s concerns and does not dismiss the questions raised in the group.

How has the programme changed your life?

I am now aware of how to reduce my HbA1c count and am pleased to be reducing my risk of becoming diabetic. The programme has helped me to address portion sizes and structure my eating to make sure I only take on the right amount of energy. I have been able to better structure my day and nutrition.

Will you continue to follow the programme now you have finished?

I like that the course is over a number of months, this will help me change my lifestyle. It has helped me change the way I eat and have a better awareness of carbohydrates. I am now in the habit of looking at food labels, avoiding certain kinds of foods and restricting others. I have increased the amount of fruit and vegetables I eat, pretty much close to 7-a-day.

Would you recommend the programme to others, and why?

Yes, I would very much recommend the programme to others. It is much what people need to reduce their risk of becoming Type 2 diabetic. There are so many people at risk we are so lucky to be offered the programme.

Do you mind sharing your results? If so, what has the improvement been?

I would very much like to share my results, esp. I have been able to make sustainable changes to my health, wellbeing and body composition. I’ve seen a reduction in my waistline and have a greater sense of well-being and control in my life.
