Healthier You: Alan’s journey on the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

Healthier You is an NHS-backed programme delivered by Xyla that helps people make lasting lifestyle changes for better health. Originally focused on preventing Type 2 diabetes, it now offers a wider range of services, including obesity support and help for long-term conditions.

This free programme combines expertise in nutrition, psychology, and physical activity to promote sustainable behaviour change. Support is delivered through group sessions and digital tools, empowering people to take control of their health and reducing pressure on healthcare services.

About the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) supports people at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes to make practical lifestyle changes. Healthier You is the largest provider in the UK, with over 300,000 people booked onto the programme and 99% recommending it.

Participants can choose from:

  • In-person group sessions at local venues
  • App-based sessions with remote health coach support
  • Tailored remote services for those with additional needs

Alan’s journey to better health

When Alan joined the Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) in January 2025, he was at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. He wanted to understand how lifestyle changes could help him lower his blood sugar and improve his overall wellbeing.

The programme gave Alan practical tools and knowledge about nutrition, exercise and the impact of food on health. With the guidance of his coach, Claire, Alan learned how small, sustainable changes could make a big difference long-term.

Transforming habits

Alan completely changed his diet, incorporating more vegetables, whole grains and pulses, while reducing portion sizes. He adopted to a mix of vegetables, protein and carbohydrates and cut out snacks and sweets. He swapped tea and coffee for ginger tea, used olive oil in cooking and seasoned food with herbs instead of salt.

Exercise was initially difficult due to arthritic knees but Alan persevered. He invested in a treadmill for speed walking and adapted his bike for indoor cycling. As his weight dropped, the pressure on his knees eased, making movement less painful.

Alan credits his success to the programme’s tailored approach and the encouragement of his coach:

“Our mentor, Claire, was brilliant. She gently educated and motivated us to commit and achieve our individual targets. By the end, everyone had succeeded. I can’t speak highly enough of her.”

Healthier You: The results

Alan’s commitment to the nine-month programme delivered life-changing results:

  • Weight: Reduced from 94.6 kg to 82.4 kg
  • Waist: Down from 36 inches to 32 inches
  • Blood sugar: Lowered from 43 mmol to 39 mmol
  • Blood pressure and cholesterol: Now normal, no longer requiring medication
  • Fitness: Can now speed walk at 4.3 mph for 80 minutes, six days a week

Why it matters

Alan describes the experience as “a game-changing lightbulb moment of education and empowerment.” He now feels healthier, more confident and less reliant on medication. His success story reflects the wider impact of Healthier You:

  • Reducing future demand on GPs and fewer prescriptions
  • Helping people stay active and independent for longer
  • Improving quality of life and reducing health inequalities

Alan’s advice to others looking to start the programme: “Go for it! At the end, you’ll feel better, look better and give yourself the chance to live longer rather than be plagued by tablets and GP appointments.”

Working together for healthier communities

Healthier You is a pathway to better health for individuals and stronger communities. By preventing conditions like Type 2 diabetes, we can reduce strain on healthcare services and help people live longer, healthier lives.
