Philip's journey to overcoming Type 2 diabetes
After being told I was pre-diabetic, I was left with mixed emotions. Despite that though, I remained positive and empowered to make the necessary changes. When I was offered the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme in Lambourn, I accepted because I needed the education, the ability to clarify what I thought I already knew, and the support to get my blood glucose levels into the normal range.
The programme has helped me to improve my health and wellbeing. I have lost weight, I feel better every day, I feel empowered and more confident.
What was the best part of the programme for you?
The best part of the programme for me was the knowledge you get and raising my awareness of Type 2 diabetes.
What was the hardest part of the programme for you?
I had to make some small changes to my lifestyle, some of which proved harder than I anticipated. Adjusting my diet was not as easy as I anticipated. I had to reduce the quantity of bread I was eating and cut down on the sugary snacks I was having. I changed my shopping habits, by limiting the amount of confectionery I buy. I love cooking and I am the cook at home so I’ve had to adjust that too.
What did you think of the support groups?
I found the group sessions very supportive and helpful.
Did you find the plan easy to follow?
The structure of the programme was easy to follow and you feel supported the whole time.
How has the programme changed your life?
The programme has helped me change my life for the better, mainly with my diet, but also lifestyle changes focusing on my behaviours.
Will you continue to follow the programme now you have finished?
Yes, The SMART goal I set myself was to do over 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week, and I have achieved my goal but also doubled that! I feel confident I can continue with the lifestyle changes I have made. I would recommend the programme to others to help them avoid future health risks.
Do you mind sharing your results?
During the programme I have achieved my SMART goals, I have started and maintained the dietary, physical activity, stress management and sleep changes. I managed to lose over 13lbs and will continue to maintain that and lose a bit more.
