David’s story to beat Type 2 diabetes
Everyday around 700 people a day are diagnosed with diabetes – that’s one person every two minutes. Xyla Health & Wellbeing have teamed with NHS Healthier You to create a series of Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programmes (DPP) across the UK. We spoke to one of our service users, David, about his experience on the Wirral Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, and he shares his story with us. Having recognised he was at risk of Type 2 diabetes due to his glucose intolerance he has suffered with for 10 years, David was determined to develop a healthier lifestyle to ensure he stayed diabetes free. David has lost over half a stone whilst being on the programme and feels much healthier for it.
What was the most interesting part of the programme for you?
I have recently finished the Healthy Foundations and Physical Activity sessions of the programme. You learn about the breakdown of different food groups, but more specifically on the sugar quantity in foods that you eat on a regular basis. I was shocked at the amount of sugar there was in food such as bread.
What was the hardest part of the programme for you?
I particularly enjoy eating bread, so having to reduce my bread consumption was very difficult. It was also highlighted that I needed to reduce my portions sizes, which again was hard to change but I got there in the end.
How did you find out about the support groups and what did you think?
I was referred to the DPP support groups by my GP after being told I was at risk of Type 2 diabetes. I found the support groups very motivational and inspiring. I thought the group interaction was a very important aspect. It allowed me to listen to how other individuals in my group coped and changed their lifestyle. Through this I was able to change and try different approaches to creating a healthy lifestyle for myself.
Did you feel supported throughout the process?
I felt incredibly supported throughout the programme by my coach, as well as the other individuals in my group. My coach was fantastic and motivated me throughout. I was made to feel comfortable in every session and understood all the concepts we were taught.
How has the programme changed your life?
Being able to know which foods I need to eat for my body type and lifestyle has proven to be invaluable. Without this knowledge I don’t think I would have reduced my risk of developing diabetes or been able to lose over half a stone during the programme.
Will you continue to follow the programme now you have finished?
Yes, I am determined to stay diabetes free. The booklet I received from the group is very informative and easy to follow, which will help me to continue with the programme now I have finished the 12 week course. For this reason I would also thoroughly recommend the programme to others who are at risk of Type 2 diabetes.
