Patient information

You have taken an important first step and found out you are at high risk of Type 2 diabetes. The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme will help you take control of your health, supporting you to make changes to your diet, weight and the amount of physical activity you do. Taking action now is very important as it can stop you developing Type 2 diabetes.

In this section of the programme we will look at different ways that you can become more physically active. It’s important to stress that this doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money buying fancy gear or paying for a gym membership. It also doesn’t mean you need to start running or take up any kind of exercise that you don’t enjoy. Whenever you move in any way (even doing the housework or gardening) this counts as physical activity

In this stage of the programme, we’ll learn more about why, when and what we eat and drink. We’ll consider how food intake is influenced by psychological, social, economic and cultural factors. We’ll also look at our basic nutrient and fluid requirements and consider the importance of calories and energy balance

This stage of the programme focusses on how your lifestyle and behaviour changes can support you to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. You will look at some of the challenges you might encounter. This handbook offers skills and techniques for managing stress, thoughts and sleep.
